Christine Turner, Filmmaker

Christine Turner is a filmmaker in New York whose work has been called “Exquisitely tender” and “Thoughtful and enlightening” by the Washington Post.  An alum of Firelight Media's Documentary Lab, her films include BETYE SAAR: TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS, about the 93 year-old artist whose work explodes stereotypes of Black femininity, and HOMEGOINGS, about a renowned funeral director in Harlem and the community he serves.  In addition, Christine’s short fiction work has screened at festivals worldwide including Sundance.  Her latest documentary, LYNCHING POSTCARDS: TOKEN OF A GREAT DAY is now streaming on Paramount+.

Maori Karmael Holmes, Moderator

Maori Karmael Holmes is a curator, filmmaker and writer. She founded BlackStar in 2012 and serves as its Artistic Director and CEO. She has organized programs in film at a myriad of organizations including Anthology Film Archives, Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), The Underground Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. As a director, her works have screened internationally including her feature documentary Scene Not Heard: Women in Philadelphia Hip-Hop (2006). She has also directed and produced works for Colorlines.com, Visit Philadelphia, and singer-songwriter India.Arie. Her writing has appeared in The Believer,Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good, and How We Fight White Supremacy: A Field Guide to Black Resistance. Maori received her MFA in Film & Media Arts from Temple University and her BA in History from American University.

Dr. Terry Anne Scott, Panelist

Dr. Terry Anne Scott is an award-winning scholar, writer, and speaker.  She is Associate Professor of African American and United States history at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, where she serves as Chair of the Department of History.  Dr. Scott’s research and teaching interests focus largely on African American social and cultural history. She is the author of Lynching and Leisure: Race and the Transformation of Mob Violence in Texas; From Bed-Stuy to the Hall of Fame: The Unexpected Life of Lenny Wilkens (forthcoming 2022), and the editor of Seattle Sports:  Play, Identity, and Pursuit in the Emerald City. She regularly appears on Baltimore’s local NPR station and lectures on race and racism across the country.

Lumumba Akinwole-Bandele, Panelist

Lumumba Akinwole-Bandele is a father, husband, longtime community organizer and educator from Central Brooklyn. Lumumba is the former National Strategies and Partnerships Director at The Movement for Black Lives. From 2011 to 2020, Lumumba served as the Director of Community Organizing at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.  As a member and organizer with the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, Mr. Akinwole-Bandele helped establish its campaign to counter police abuse and misconduct. He also co-founded the world renowned Black August Hip Hop Project. Lumumba currently serves as a board member for the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center, and  the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute.
